Early Life and Education
Ivan Leon Saltzman was born in 1950 in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. He pursued a career in pharmacology, qualifying as a pharmacist in 1974 from the Johannesburg School of Pharmacy (now part of the University of the Witwatersrand). During his studies, he met Lynette, who would later become his wife and long-term business partner.
Co-Founding Dis-Chem Pharmacies
In 1978, using an initial capital investment of approximately R10,000, Ivan and Lynette Saltzman opened their first retail pharmacy in Mondeor, a suburb south of Johannesburg. Operating in a competitive and fragmented retail pharmacy market, the business broke even within its first year generating R84,000 in revenue.
The enterprise achieved a commercial breakthrough following the opening of a second location at the Randridge Mall in Randburg in 1982. Toward the late 1980s, the Saltzmans implemented a corporate strategy centered on aggressive discounting and expanding front-shop product offerings. During the 1990s, the footprint expanded across Johannesburg and Pretoria.
When the South African government deregulated corporate pharmacy ownership in the early 2000s allowing non-pharmacists to own dispensaries Dis-Chem utilized its established brand to accelerate national expansion rather than yielding market share to emerging supermarket competitors.
Corporate Expansion and Public Listing
Over more than four decades of operations, Dis-Chem transitioned from a privately held family business into a publicly traded corporation, expanding its geographic presence across South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. By the mid-2020s, the company grew to encompass over 200 pharmacies, employing more than 23,000 full-time staff members.
Leadership Transition and Net Worth
Saltzman served as the Chief Executive Officer of Dis-Chem Pharmacies Limited from its inception until 2023, at which point former Chief Financial Officer Rui Morais assumed the role of CEO as part of a planned leadership transition.
Following the CEO transition, Saltzman maintained active involvement on the board, holding the position of Deputy Chairman. On June 30, 2026, he formally retired from his role as an executive director after 48 years of service to the company, retaining a seat on the board as a non-executive director.
Concurrently, equity liquidations by Saltzman and his family led to his first inclusion on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, with a listed family net worth of approximately USD$1.3 billion. Alongside his core responsibilities at Dis-Chem, Saltzman has maintained active directorships across numerous corporate entities, holding companies and property portfolios linked to the retail group's supply chain and infrastructure.
Personal Life
Saltzman lives in South Africa with his wife, Lynette. They have three sons: Saul, Mark and Dan who have also participated in the operations of the family business. Additionally, through corporate initiatives, the family established the Dis-Chem Foundation in 2006 to manage the group's community and social responsibility programs.
