Dis-Chem Pharmacies Limited (commonly known as Dis-Chem) is the second-largest retail pharmacy chain in South Africa. Headquartered in Midrand, Gauteng, the company operates an integrated retail and wholesale supply chain network with over 300 stores across Southern Africa, including locations in Namibia. Dis-Chem has been listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) under the ticker symbol DCP since November 2016.

History and Expansion

Dis-Chem was founded in 1978 by pharmacists Ivan and Lynette Saltzman, opening its first retail location in Mondeor, Johannesburg. The company introduced a high-volume, discount-based pharmacy model, offering consumer and retail product categories that were previously restricted or unavailable in traditional South African pharmacies.

The company expanded outside South Africa for the first time in 2014 by opening a store in Windhoek, Namibia. In November 2016, Dis-Chem listed 27.5% of its share capital on the JSE, raising approximately R4.4 billion in what was the second-largest initial public offering on the exchange that year. Following the listing, the group accelerated its retail footprint, aiming to double its store network.

Operations and Business Model

Dis-Chem operates within the food, drug, and healthcare retail industry. Its core business combines a nationwide retail pharmacy footprint with centralized distribution and wholesale infrastructure.

The company’s operations are segmented into several divisions and service offerings:

• Retail Offering: In addition to prescription and over-the-counter medications, stores retail health supplements, personal care, beauty products, cosmetics, and front-shop convenience merchandise.
• Primary Healthcare: Dis-Chem operates in-store clinics staffed by qualified healthcare professionals to offer basic medical services, diagnostic testing, telehealth services, and health insurance options.
• Wholesale and Distribution: Its wholesale arm, CJ Distribution, operates national warehouses in regions including Longmeadow, Midrand, KwaZulu-Natal, Delmas, and the Western Cape, serving both corporate stores and external clients.
• Subsidiaries: The group expanded its retail focus by acquiring the mother and baby care retailer, Baby City, in 2021.

Corporate Governance and Leadership

For several decades, Dis-Chem operated under an entrepreneurial, founder-led management structure. In July 2026, founder Ivan Saltzman retired as chairman of the board, marking a corporate transition toward institutional governance. The group is currently managed under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Rui Morais, while the Saltzman family maintains a shareholding of over 25% in the company.

Regulatory Matters and Controversy

Dis-Chem operates within a highly regulated environment subject to South African healthcare, pricing, and dispensing legislation.

In July 2020, the Competition Tribunal of South Africa found Dis-Chem guilty of inflating prices on essential hygiene products, specifically disposable face masks, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Tribunal levied an administrative penalty of R1.2 million. Dis-Chem declined to appeal the ruling, citing a desire to avoid prolonged reputational damage.
