Best 5G Networks in South Africa | IBSA
Network Best For Key Performance Metrics & Features
Vodacom Fastest 5G Speeds & 5G Coverage Dominates nationwide 5G download speeds (exceeds MTN by over 60 Mbps, often averaging over 195 Mbps). Wins the 5G Coverage Experience award outright.
MTN 5G Availability & Gaming Highest 5G Availability (users connect to active 5G 12.4% of the time). Wins 4 out of 5 5G Experience categories, including top honors for 5G mobile multiplayer gaming.
Rain 5G Home Internet & Indoor Coverage Deploying sub-1 GHz Massive MIMO technology with Huawei to boost indoor penetration, increase uplink by 5 dB and triple network capacity.

Vodacom: Best for Raw Speed and Coverage

Vodacom delivers the fastest 5G performance in South Africa, leading download speeds nationwide and across all nine regions. Its average 5G download speeds routinely surpass 195 Mbps, maintaining a lead of more than 60 Mbps over MTN. Vodacom also ranks first in 5G Coverage Experience, scoring 2.0 out of 10 on Opensignal's scale.

MTN: Best for Network Availability and Consistency

MTN focuses on connection consistency, securing four out of five major 5G Experience awards. It leads the market in 5G Availability, with users spending 12.4% of their time on an active 5G connection compared to Vodacom's 7.6%. MTN is also rated as the top network for real-time mobile multiplayer gaming on 5G. The operator currently runs more than 4,000 5G sites reaching 44% of the population.

Rain: Best for Fixed 5G Home Wireless

Rain focuses heavily on data-only, uncapped 5G home internet packages within major urban economic hubs like Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban. In collaboration with Huawei, Rain is rolling out a sub-1 GHz Massive MIMO 5G network. This technical deployment improves signal penetration deep indoors, enhances downlink coverage by 3 dB, and expands overall network capacity up to three times over standard infrastructure.

What About Telkom and Cell C?

Telkom and Cell C currently have highly limited independent 5G reach. While Telkom commands strong overall 3G/4G/5G signal availability at 99.1%, its standalone 5G infrastructure remains small. Cell C does not operate a massive independent 5G network; instead, its customers access 5G speeds by roaming on Vodacom's infrastructure.
